Major Investment in Waterford Airport to Boost Connectivity for Kilkenny
Kilkenny is set to benefit significantly from a landmark €30 million private investment in Waterford Airport, approved by Waterford City and County Council on Monday, 20th October 2025. Just a 45-minute drive from Kilkenny via the M9, the redeveloped airport will offer enhanced regional connectivity, new business opportunities, and greater access to international travel for people and businesses across the county.
The investment, led by the Bolster Group through a new company, Waterford Airport Ltd (WAL), will fund a full redevelopment of the airport. Key upgrades include a major runway extension to accommodate large jet aircraft, expanded terminal facilities, and improved ground infrastructure.
The project is designed to restore scheduled commercial passenger services by the end of 2027, with a target of handling over 400,000 passengers annually within five years. This will open up new travel and trade routes for Kilkenny and make the region more attractive for inward investment and tourism.
The development is expected to benefit over half a million people across the South East, including Kilkenny, by improving access to international markets, supporting job creation, and enhancing quality of life.
With Waterford Airport just a short drive away, Kilkenny is well-positioned to benefit from this significant development for the South-East region.
