Over €3 Million Announced for Active Travel and Greenway Development in Kilkenny
Kilkenny is set to benefit from a major boost to sustainable transport in 2026, with more than €3 million in capital funding allocated for local Active Travel and Greenway projects. This investment marks a significant step forward in delivering safer, healthier and more connected walking and cycling routes for communities across the county.
The funding will advance key projects such as improved Active Travel facilities on the Waterford Road, rapid deployment upgrades along the Freshford and Granges Roads, and design work to enhance Active Travel infrastructure around the Ring Road. A feasibility study has also been funded to examine options for a future Northern River Crossing, supporting long‑term planning and development in Kilkenny City.
Beyond urban improvements, several rural communities will see upgraded footpaths, safer junctions and new school‑focused walking and cycling measures, including works in Piltown, Thomastown, Callan, Bennettsbridge, Castlecomer, Paulstown, Stoneyford, Mooncoin, Johnstown and Hugginstown. These projects aim to make everyday journeys safer for families, students and residents.
Kilkenny’s greenway network continues to progress strongly, with more than €500,000 recently allocated for greenway development, complementing the €1.7 million received in 2025. The 24km South East Greenway, linking Kilkenny to New Ross and Waterford, has seen substantial progress, with 14km already completed by late 2025. Further funding will support continued delivery of this regionally significant route, alongside local greenway connections such as links to Woodstock Estate.
Overall, these investments strengthen Kilkenny’s commitment to sustainable transport, improved public health and enhanced local tourism. With new infrastructure planned countywide, Kilkenny is well positioned to expand its walking and cycling network in 2026 and beyond.
